Notes for James Gilmore (Col.):

  • Col. James Gilmore was a soldier in the French and Revolutionary Wars and did valiant service. May 7, 1764, he was appointed Ensign in the 7th Company, 8th Regiment by the Royal Governor, Benning Wentworth.
  • May 10th, 1770 he was Commissioned Lieutenant in the same company by Governor John Wentworth.
  • September 5, 1775 the Congress of the Colony of New Hampshire appointed him Captain of the 3rd Co., 8th Regt.
  • Dec. 2nd, 1775 the Committee of safety authorized him to raise immediately a company of sixty one men to serve in the Continental Army and report to General Sullivan at Winter Hill (Somerville Mass.)
  • He was elected Major by vote of the town. He was commissioned Colonel of 8th Regiment March 25, 1785 by Mescech Weare, President of the state.
  • His service as Captain was in Colonel Burnham's Regt. at Winter Hill, July to Oct. 1776.
  • He was in Captain Barrows Company, Col. Wyman's Regt. in the Canadian Expedition; August 1778 in Col. Gales Regt. of volunteers for Rhode Island.
  • In the N.H. War Records James Gilmore Enlisted April 28, 1758 and discharged October 4, 1758 for Crown Point service.

    James bought land at Moose Point, Belfast, Maine, on the westerly side of the Penobscot River. This was for speculation as he never lived in Belfast. The first occupation of James was that of blacksmith. Samuel Houston Jr., William Houston and John Brown,Jr. all of Belfast Maine. appraisers of the estate of James Gilmore late of Salem, in the County of Rockingham, State of New Hampshire.

Notes for James Gilmore (Lieutenant):

James was a Private at Bunker Hill in his father's command; an Ensign in the Northern Army at Ticonderoga; a Sergeant at Bennington where his company was first to scale the " Hussein Breat-works" in Captain Crossbar's company, Col. Nichols Regiment.
He was later second Lieutenant under Captain John Burnham 13th Co., 5th Regiment, N.H. Militia, Organized in Amherst N.H. He went to Belfast in 1784 and settled on lot #19 and #41. Elizabeth Cristy  was a daughter of Capt. John Cristy.

Captain Charles Thomas Gilmore, Master of the schooner Florida, was drowned on the passage from Boston. He fell from the stern, probably in an attack of heart failure, to which he had been subject.

aptain Gilmore, was a Master Mariner, sailing out of Belfast, Maine. He volunteered for the Civil War at the age of 28. He lived at the corner of Union Street and Commercial Street in Belfast.
In 1863 he was captain of the schooner Abby Ellen.
In 1871 He was captain of the schooner Dione.
In 1872/75 he was captain of the schooner Florida
March 4th, 1890 the schooner St. Johns commanded by Captain Fredrick Augustas Gilmore from Jacksonville, Florida for New York went ashore near Cape Hatteras N.C. and was a total loss. The crew were taken off by life saving men, except Henry Sanders, who was washed overboard and drowned.She was a 3 masted vessel of 406 tons built in Belfast in 1882 by Carter & Company.

In 1887 steamers ran as before in May, the steamer May Queen, 84 tons built by Carter & Company for parties in Belfast was launched and the next month ran to Castine, being commanded by Captain Fredrick Augustas Gilmore.
On July 12th, 14 steamers engaged in catching porgies were visible in the bay.

Notes for Harriet Leonese Gilmore:

From the Obituary. It is of great sorrow that the many friends in Belfast learned of the sudden death in Bangor of Mrs. Harriet L. Jones, wife of Wilfred E. Jones, formerly of this city. Although she had been ill for some time with Angina Pectoris, she had of late been much better and the end came without warning. Mrs. Jones was born in Belfast in 1867, the daughter of the late Captain Fred A. Gilmore and Adelaide S. Bagley. In 1890 she married Mr. Jones who for many years was in business in Belfast and later in Newport, R.I. New York City and Somerville Mass. For some time they lived in Bangor where their only daughter, Francis, wife of Leroy Paul is now located. Besides her husband and daughter she is survived by a grandson, Wilfred Paul and a grand-daughter, Marion Paul of Bangor and by one sister, Mrs. Austin W. Keating of Belfast. Funeral services will be held Friday at the home of her daughter at 117 Norway Road, Bangor and the remains will be brought to Belfast. A number of relatives and friends will go to Bangor tomorrow to attend the service. Mrs. Jones was of an exceptionally pleasing personality and made many friends wherever she went, never losing a friend once made and her frequent visits to Belfast have kept her in touch with her schoolgirl friends throughout the years.

From the Obituary. Mrs. Frances J. Paul, 77, widow of Leroy A. Paul, died unexpectedly in a Belfast hospital Sunday. She was born at Rockland Feb. 18, 1893, daughter of Wilfred E. and Harriette (Gilmore) Jones. She is survived by one son, L. Wilfred Paul of Northport; one daughter, Mrs. Marion Field of this town of Belfast; two grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and one cousin. Funeral services will be held at 2p.m. Wednesday at the Ratcliffe Funeral Home conducted by Dr. Daniel Fenner of the First Church of Belfast. Interment will be in Grove Cemetery in Belfast.

Leroy was a farmer and a automobile dealer, He resided in Belfast, Bangor and Morril Maine. He owned and operated a Dodge dealership at the Belfast circle across the steet from the post office and was a landmark for years till it was torn down to build a bank.
